Finding the perfect name is an important step every entrepreneur is facing
when starting a new business. Having a brandable and memorable
name is the foundation for a successful venture; not having it could cost you an
arm and a leg in marketing costs, but no-one still remembers it.
With more than 150 million names already registered, you'd get a serious headache
brainstorming for names and looking them up in the Whois database one-by-one, only
to find that all the sensible ones are already taken. Good website names are
still out there, its just not that easy to find them.
So we've built something that can save you a lot of valuable time. Some clever algorithms
and language rules in MakeWords deliver hundreds of new unique name ideas instantly.
In the beginning it may take a couple of minutes of getting used to it, but once
you do, you'll save hours naming for your future products or brands. We even have
pages where you can find a name for your pet,
baby, roleplay character or for your AIM
or MSN screen name!
When you first arrive to our home page, you'll immediately see ten
names that are created with our most basic name generation method:
This tool is great for finding names that don't necessarily mean anything, but are
short and pronounceable enough to be brandable and memorable. Names like
Google or Yahoo! would fall into this
category.
Creating such names is as easy as continuously hitting the Start button,
until a name you like pops up. With every click, ten new names are generated
using some preset language rules, that make the word "sound like" it would have
derived from a certain language. Without getting into much detail, the way it is
done is analyzing the probability of certain letter sequences and lexical patterns
of that language. With some luck, you'll get a short, available website name within
a couple of minutes.
If you'd like to decrease the luck factor, enter some optional parameters like the
first letters of the name into the "Begins" box. Set the Page Size to 30
to display more results on one screen (results are returned a bit slower).
It is always a good idea to click on the alternatives link when
a name you like is taken, to get more results from the Yahoo name suggestion
engine. And if you need time to think about which name you are going to choose,
just click on add to favorites, so you can create a list of domains and
review it later in My Favorites; or maybe show it
to your friends of colleagues to get a second opinion.
If you'd like to return to your favorites and your saved keywords later,

Another popular way of producing a Website Name is by adding an affix to it. Names
like besttoys.com or buy-adventure-books.com are very easy
to remember, they are search-engine friendly, because they contain the actual words
people are searching for.
We have carefully selected hundreds of affixes that contain words you can simply
combine with your own keywords to find available domains.
Let's say you need a name for a hobby site for an interior design business.
Sample results (Keyword "interior", Category "Positive Thinking I".
Try It!):
Naturally, it is harder to find names with keywords like home, travel
or pets. In such cases you have an option to:
- use synonyms (which we will cover in the next subsection)
- base, domestic, domicile, dwelling, habitation,
house, household, place;
- check the "insert a hyphen" checkbox to produce names like home-abc.com
or home-tips.com;
- type in an optional Extra Prefix (like my or the) or Extra Suffix
(s for plurals, d for past tense etc.) to get results like mytravelabc.com
or petwins.com.
All domains used in these examples were available at the time of writing.
Since there are different words for different needs, we have sorted them to separate
categories. The Positive Thinking category for example contains the
names that are meant to provoke positive thoughts - like best,
free, super, win. The Shopping category contains
affixes usually used in e-commerce websites, like buy, savings,
value, discounts and so on.
The following categories are available for the Combine keywords search:

A popular keyword like vacations may not return many available results,
so you can find an alternative with the Synonym search. The words in English
dictionary are long gone, so you should run the Synonym
search with some Extra Prefix or Suffix. Or you can use that synonym
in the Combine keywords search.
Sample results (Keyword: "home", Extra Suffix: "pages".

Note that below the results table there is a definition for all the synonyms found
with similar terms associated with that synonym. Clicking on any of the
similar terms runs the Synonym search again, now with the word you clicked
on.
This is different from the Phonetic Words search because
there are no language rules used. The results that are produced here could be difficult
to remember if the words are too long. However, this search may be very effective
if you are looking for the shortest possible Website Names that contain only 4 or
5 characters (select the length preferences using the Min and Max
boxes).
Most 4-character .com-s are taken, but there are a few left, especially if you choose
to include numbers in your search. And you can always search within other Top Level
Domains like ".net" or ".info", just select the appropriate extension from the dropdown
list.
There are three options for this search type - you can choose to randomize with
Letters and Numbers, Letters only or Numbers only.
Sample results (Min length: 4, Max length: 5.
Try It!)
When you find a name you like with any of our searches, but the TLD (Top Level Domain
or domain extension, like .com) is taken, you might want to try
to search within other TLD-s.
This is what this search does - just enter a name you wish to get, and we'll run
the check for the internet's most popular TLD-s: .com, .net, .info,
.biz, .us, .org and .ws (ws as in website).

The Blender creates permutations of the keywords saved in My Keywords.
Every time you search with methods like Phonetic words, Combined keywords,
Synonyms etc. and enter a keyword, we'll save that word in My Keywords,
if you are a registered user and have signed in. The Blender analyzes those
words, splits them apart and mixes up into new results that might give you alternative
ideas for names. Each time you hit the "Start" button, a new set of unique results
will be generated. This works best if you have at least 20 items in your keywords.
The more the better. Naturally you can edit the list of your keywords, add and remove
the items you consider significant or not so.
Lets say you are throwing the following keywords into the Blender:
aerobic, athlet, beauty, bio, bodybuilding, burn, diet, endurance, exercise, fitness,
flex, gym, health, life, lift, muscle, nutri, run, skinny, spa, sport, strong, trainer,
training, vital, vitamin, vitamins, weightloss, workout.
Sample results (Try It! , if you
are registered)
If the first set of results may not make much sense, running the search again returns
names that are more likely suitable for a health, fitness or bodybuilding site:
nutriexer.com, sportamin.com, bioscle.com.
These names were available at the time of writing.
Not only can you elaborate on My Keywords,
but also similar technique can be applied to the items you have in
My Favorites or My Affixes, provided
that you have enough words saved in those categories.
We need you to register as a MakeWords.com user to be
able to run the Blender, so
we could gather your keywords and also save them for the next time you return to
our site.
Whois window
Clicking the Whois link on the search page opens a small window
where you can search for exact names and get information about who owns a domain
name.
What to do if you have found a suitable Website Name?
So you have found a perfect name you were looking for? Congratulations!
Now you have to take the extra step to secure it and make sure no-one else uses
it before you do. Website Name registration is not something you should be intimidated
about. It is a fairly straightforward process, where you just have to follow the
step-by-step instructions given by your domain registration provider. All you need
to know is your contact information, no technical knowledge is required (at least
at the process of purchase. The name servers and such can be configured later).
If you don't know which registrar to choose, go ahead and take a look at our
top domain registrars page. If you are still unsure, go
with a known registrar like Yahoo or GoDaddy.
Not only do we suggest the Website Name ideas, but the same methods can be applied
when searching for Pet names,
Baby names, Roleplay character names,
Instant Messaging Screen names etc. These pages
display 100 results per page instantly, no Website Names are being searched. If you'd
like to query a name for domain availability though, just click on it and we'll
run a quick Multiple TLD-s search on it.
Hope that we've saved you some time and you can focus on your daily business now,
without having to worry about running out of name ideas ever again!
If you found a perfect name with us, please let your friends
know about it or write us a testimonial.
We appreciate your endorsement!
Good luck!
